After 33 Years Of Separation, Woman Reunites With Her Father During Year Of Return In Ghana

The year 2019 marked exactly 400 years since the first black slaves landed in Jamestown Virginia in the U.S.

Consequently, the government of Ghana earmarked the year as ‘The Year of Return’ for people of Ghanaian, and indeed African, heritage to ‘return home’.

Ghana’s Year of Return agenda was a great success as many European and especially African-American celebrities, and individuals who trace their roots to Africa or affiliate themselves to Africa trooped to the country.

The list of notable persons who visited Ghana to mark the Year of Return is countless.

American rapper and songwriter, Cardi B was in Ghana for a show. Rapper T.I and his wife were also in the country that same week. Steve Harvey had been to Ghana and Ludacris joined later on. Akon, Jay Z and Beyonce were all said to have visited Ghana for the year of return.

While the concentration had been on the celebrities who visited the country, many awesome stories were also taking place which would have been missed if not for the power of social media.

A lady who has been identified by name as Kiki Efunnuga, shared a social media post on Instagram about how the Year of Return meant more to her than simply attending the many entertainment events in the country.

According to Kiki, she had been separated from her father for 33 years and they were reunited in Ghana during the Year of Return.

She said her story on Instagram as follows:

This trip to Ghana meant more to me than just the Afrochella experience as one of my primary goals was to reunite with my father whom I haven’t seen since leaving Nigeria at the age of two.

Growing up as the youngest of seven children raised by a single mother, I credit my mother for the amazing job she’s done, however, I’ve still always yearned for the presence and affection of my father.

I blame no one for the circumstances leading to our separation and am now ecstatic to have been reunited with my father after 33 years while in Ghana celebrating the year of return.

Our time together thus far has been surreal. His embrace was better than I could have imagined. My life now has new meaning.
