The first human test subject was a scientist named Elisa Granato (picture below). She disclosed that she volunteered because she wanted to try to support the scientific process.

Sarah Gilbert, professor of vaccinology at the Jenner Institute, told the press that she has confidence in th potency of the vaccine.

“Of cource, we have to test it and get data from humans. We have to demonstrate it actually works and stops people from getting infected with coronavirus before using the vaccine in the wider population,”She said.

According to BBC, the coronavirus vaccine is made from a weakened version of a common cold virus (known as an adenovirus) from chimpanzees that has been modified so it cannot grow in humans, according to BBC.

The Oxford team working on the vaccine have already had success in developing a vaccine against Mers, another type of coronavirus and the results were impressive.

The only way the team will measure the success of the coronavirus vaccine is by comparing the number of people who get infected with the virus in the coming month from the trial.

A larger trail of about 5,000 volunteers is said to begin in the coming months and will have no age limits if the trail is successful.
