The Minister of Communication, Hon. Ursula Owusu has revealed that the Dansoman Zodiac branch of one the mobile telecommunication giants in Africa, MTN, has been shut down.

According to the Minister, the decision to stop the office from operating was due to the fact that their customers were in violation of the social distancing rules.

If you recall, since the onset of the coronavirus pandemic, the government of Ghana has put several measures in place to curb the spread of the virus.

Recently, after lifting the ban on the lockdown in some parts of the country, the President, Nana Akufo-Addo, announced however that the ban on social gathering is still in force.

In that regard, citizens were obliged to adhere to social distancing protocols in their daily activities as well as mandatory wearing of nose masks.

Sharing a picture of customers of MTN who had queued to be served at the Dansoman Zodiac branch, Hon. Ursula Owusu intimated that social distancing rules were not being observed.

She thus disclosed that the office will be closed until they make arrangements to ensure that this is enforced.

The honorable minister said in Facebook post that: This is the scene at the MTN office at Dansoman Zodiac right now. Absolutely no respect for social distancing.

They have been shut down and will not be allowed to operate till they have better arrangements in place. Reputable corporate organization like this should not be flouting the law and creating conditions for the virus to spread.

Actor Van Vicker has expressed fear in the rise of the number of Ghanaians affected by the deadly respiratory disease COVID-19.

Van Vicker believes the mood at which government is distributing relief items to persons under lockdown is totally wrong and will do more harm than good.

As a means to reduce the spread of the virus, government has imposed restrictions on movement in some parts of the country and pledged to distribute relief items to some 400,000 Ghanaians living from hand-to-mouth.

In the view of Van Vicker government is doing a cos 90 job as the method of sharing these relief items rather puts the country in grave danger.

He begged the President to review the distribution method because it defeats the whole purpose of social distancing and rather spreads the virus.

Government’s decision to continue the mass registration for the Ghana Card by the National Identification Authority (NIA) has angered some Ghanaian celebrities.

Ghanaian Actress Lydia Forson and Actor John Dumelo have gone on a twitter rant, rallying people against NIA registrations amid COVID-19 outbreak.

Lydia Forson in a series of tweets went on to echo how inhumane it sounds to put the lives of citizens at risk over a card.

She shared her view saying the virus is exposing everything wrong in this country for you to see, it’s up to you to decide if you should continue to allow leaders to treat you like crap! adding that “Anyone who justifies the NIA registration has an agenda.”

Loudmouth Ghanaian personality, Afia Schwarzenegger has given the Government of Ghana three noteworthy points on how to fight COVID-19 in the country.

Afia took to social media amid chastising advised the government of Ghana led by H.E Nana Akufo-Addo to be proactive in the fight against the deadly virus.

According to Afia, the president should not wait till Ghana records 15,000 positive cases before he locks down the country.

The Right to Information (RTI) Bill was passed on 26 March 2019 by the Parliament of Ghana.

The RTI is to enable citizens to hold government accountable to ensure that there is a high level of transparency in governance of the country.

Prior to its passage, various stakeholders believed the delay in passing the bill into law was to allow exemptions of certain vital information bordering around government policies which they intend to conceal from the public. source.

Having now being passed into law, the government’s Ministry of Information has outlined steps and timelines to request for information under the Right To Information Act, 2019 (Act 989).

According to the Ministry of Information, in the first of the requesting for information, one has to apply by submitting applications for information to public institutions starting January 2020.

The applications should be addressed to the information Officer. There are standard forms available at Public Institutions to aid the applicant.

In the second step of requesting for information, the Registry of the Public Institution will advise the applicant on when and how to expect a response.

Regarding timelines, the Ministry estimates a response within 48 hours for information to safeguard the life or liberty of a person, and 14 days for all other information.

The third step involves decision on the application. The response shall convey the decision on the application, the prescribed fee for the reproduction of the information as well as the manner and form of access.

In the fourth and final step, where the applicant is dissatisfied with the decision, an appeal may be made to the Head of Institution and subsequently to the RTI commission, where the appeal decision still remains unsatisfactory.
