Ivorian Vice President, Daniel Kablan Duncan, has resigned from his position effective Monday, July 13, the presidency has confirmed.

The secretary-general of the presidency, Patrick Achi, told newsmen that the 77-year-old’s resignation was due to personal reasons.

Achi said in a statement;

“The President of the Republic proceeded on Wednesday, July 8, to the signing of a decree terminating the functions of Daniel Kablan Duncan as vice president of the Republic.

“After several talks, the last of which took place on Tuesday, July 7, President Alassane Ouattara took note of this resignation and proceeded to sign the decree terminating Daniel Kablan Duncan.”

It is said that he stepped down from his position days after the sudden death of Prime Minister Amadou Gon Coulibaly, who was also the ruling party’s candidate for October’s presidential election.

Daniel Kablan leaves office having previously served as Prime Minister of Côte d’Ivoire from 1993-1999 under Henri Konan Bedié and again from 2012-2017 under the current president, Ouattara.

The Prime Minister of Ivory Coast, Amadou Gon Coulibaly has has been confirmed dead by the secretary-general in the Presidency.

His death, comes barely a week after returning from a medical leave and few months to the country’s presidential election. He was 61-years.

According to reports from Bloomberg, Coulibaly died on Wednesday July 8 after attending a cabinet meeting. The secretary-general in the presidency, Patrick Achi, said on television.

This leaves his political party only four months to nominate a competent successor before the presidential election in October.

Amadou Gon Coulibaly, before his death was selected by the President of Ivory Coast Alassane Ouattara back in March 2020 to succeed him.

He once served as Minister for Agriculture from 2002 to 2010 and secretary-general of the presidency from 2011 to 2017 before assuming office as the Prime Minister in 2017.

Ivorian soccer icon, Didier Drogba has offered his hospital in Ivory Coast as treatment center for people affected by the deadly coronavirus.

Drogba’s hospital, located at the heart of the capital Abidjan will serve as one of the 13 hospitals in the country to be used as coronavirus centers.

Head of Abidjan’s regional council, Vincent Toh Bi Irie, expressed his gratitude to the former Chelsea star for his selfless patriotism and said the hospital will serve the right purpose.

As per records, Ivory Coast has recorded over 574 cases of the virus with five feared dead and 85 recovering.

Didier Drogba retired from active soccer in November 2018 having scored 164 goals in 381 appearances in his club Chelsea and 63 goals in 104 appearances for his national team.

Many African music stars are expected to throng Ivory Coast to perform at a farewell to the celebrated singer DJ Arafat. The musician met his untimely death in a motor accident on Sunday 11th August 2019.

DJ Arafat performed with many African musicians. His farewell concert is expected to see performances from Fally Ipupa, Maître Gims, Davido, Sidiki Diabaté, Koffi Olomide among others.

Davido joins other top stars to perform at the event

The event will be attended by President Alassane Ouattara and other political leaders with the government already contributing $250,000. The venue is the 35.000-seat Félix Houphouët-Boigny stadium.
