Scientist at the University of Ghana have successfully determined the primary structure of the genetic material of virus responsible for the COVID-19 pandemic.

This great milestone is a big leap in finding a vaccine for the deadly virus since important information about the genetic composition of the viral strains have been obtained.

President of Ghana, Nana Akuffo-Addo applauded the Ghanaian scientific community for their advance contribution to global knowledge and expressed hope that a vaccine may be found through them.

“It is important to state, at the very onset, that scientists at the University of Ghana have successfully sequenced genomes of the virus responsible for the COVID-19 pandemic, obtaining important information about the genetic composition of viral strains in fifteen (15) of the confirmed cases in Ghana.”

“Indeed, the recent genomic characterisation of African Coronaviruses by our own scientists illustrates the need to establish the enabling framework for sustainable vaccine manufacturing in Africa. We must advance African-led partnerships to drive scientific innovations for the control of viral diseases by vaccination.”

The President in his seventh address to the nation also lifted the partial restriction on movement imposed on some parts of the country but extended closure of borders by 2-weeks and ban on public gathering indefinitely.

To the curb the spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19), the President of Ghana Nana Akufo-Addo announced that among others, universities should close down.

Indeed, the President’s call was timely given that a student of the University of Ghana who traveled to the United States and returned to the country tested positive for coronavirus.

This shutdown of universities meant that teaching and learning activities were temporarily brought to a halt although there are some weeks left for the academic semester to end.

And so today, the University of Ghana rolled out its online teaching and learning platform, Sakai, for the continuation of tuition for the remainder of the semester.

However, some students of the premier university took to social media to express their dissatisfaction with the new arrangements.

While some were concerned about the effectiveness of the online platform to facilitate teaching and learning, others were simply not happy about the arrangement because they believe it won’t be accessible to everybody.

Professor Ransford Gyampo and Dr. Paul Butakor have been served with six and four months suspension without salary after a committee set by The University of Ghana completed their investigations into the BBC’s Sex for Grades documentary.

A statement signed by the management of the University states that the suspension takes effect from January 1, 2020.

Portions of the statement also read that the lectures will be taken through training on the Universities Sexual harassment and misconduct policies and will be subjected to annual assessment for a period of five years.

A University of Ghana research to determine the serum vitamin A and nutritional status of children fed with gari and beans stew has found it can improve stunting among children.

The research which was carried out over a 6 month period, collected information on socio-demographics and vitamin A-rich foods in the Kodzobi community located in the Adaklu-Anyigbe district in the Volta Region of Ghana.

About 142 school children aged 6 to 12 years were studied for the research. After taking the children’s information, the chemical composition of the gari and beans stew was assessed before the children were fed with it and data were collected before and after that.

The research found that vitamin A deficiency (VAD) was common among the children. However, the prevalence of vitamin A deficiency among the children reduced from 95.1% to 77.5% after they were fed with the gari and beans stew 3 times a week.

According to the research finding: “the improvement in stunting among the participants may be attributed largely to the gari and beans stew they were fed.

The combination of gari and beans and fat was a potent tool in generating the required nutrients for growth.

The research, therefore, concluded among others that consumption of gari and beans stew prepared with red palm oil three times per week is recommended among children to improve vitamin A status.
