34-year-old Austin Chenge, a native of Benue State in Nigeria, has joined the race to become governor for US state of Michigan.

Austin Chenge is not only the first Nigerian to contest for the position but he is the first Republican to to do, according to Head of Media and Public Relation unit of Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Mr Abdul-Rahman Balogun.

Mr. Balogun said Chenge made his intentions to run for governor of Michigan known in March 2020. He will be challenging USA Representative Lamar Smith for the seat under the ticket of the Republican Party.

A statement from the NiDCOM added, “Chenge is a Law graduate from the University of Birmingham, England. Since the year 2018, he has been serving with the US military as a specialist.

“He is decorated with the Achievement Medal as a Distinguished Honour Graduate with a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 99.8% and for exceptional performance while on active duty.”

The Nigerian born politician is famous locally for creating a tricycle known as “Wazobia tricycle” in 2016 to improve the lives of peasant farmers in Africa.

Nigerians on social media are livid over a description the United States Department gave the country on their travel advisory page.

The Department discouraged its citizens from traveling to Nigeria because it is a violent country crawling with terrorist and criminals.

The travel advisory stated that the ill acts such as “armed robbery, assault, carjacking, kidnapping, and rape – is common throughout the country.”

It also listed some states in Nigeria and criminal activities that goes on there, “Borno and Yobe States and Northern Adamawa State due are specially known for terrorism while Adamawa, Bauchi, Borno, Gombe, Kaduna, Kano, and Yobe states due are known for kidnapping.”

This has angered many who think it is unfair for US to degrade Nigeria when similar crimes happen it their country.

Foreign students in the United States risk being deported if their schools switch to online classes due to the COVID-19 pandemic, US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) reveals.

The Student and Exchange Visitors Program (SEVP) run by the ICE made an announcement of the new rules for non-immigrant students on Monday, July 6,

In the new rules, foreign nationals enrolled in the states will have to take their online class out of the country or transfer to a school with in-person or risk being deported.

The US Department of State also revealed that they will no longer issue visas to students if they are going to school that offers online courses only.

The United States government has sanctioned six Nigerians for allegedly defrauding its citizens and businesses over $6 million through the internet.

US Secretary of States, Micheal Pompeo, made this known in a statement published on the Treasury Department website on Tuesday.

Mr Pompeo revealed in part of the statement that the “money was also stolen from innocent Americans by romance fraud, in which the designees masqueraded as affectionate partners to gain trust from victims.”

The Nigerians listed were identified as Benson Orson, Kayode Abiola, Ogunshakin Alex, Okpoh Felix, Olorunyomi Micheal, Uzuh Richard. Their names were also included in Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) specially designated nationals list, under the section of “cyber-related designation”.

The alleged fraudulent acts were committed between between 2015 and 2017, according to the statement and nothing was said about their arrest nor the bases of the six persons sanctioned.

The mother, Dr Cynthia Kudji got a degree in Family Medicine at Louisiana State University Health, while her daughter, Jasmine, also matched in General Surgery at the same University.
