Democratic Republic of Congo has recorded a new wave of Ebola Cases in Mbandaka, a city in the western part of the country.

Eteni Longondo, the minister in charge of Health revealed in a press briefing that four people have died in Mbandaka after their test results were released.

The news was also corroborated The outbreak was confirmed by Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the Director-General of the World Health Organisation.

He tweeted:

“This outbreak is a reminder that #COVID19 is not the only health threat people face.”

The central African country is battling to curb the Ebola outbreak which emerged two years ago around the country’s east. More than 2,200 people have since lost their lives.

The ongoing coronavirus pandemic has recorded five million cases. This was after a little over a hundred thousand new cases were confirmed.

Data released by the World Health Oorganization pegged the figure at 5,103,350. More than 2.7 million people are still active cases.

Almost 400,000 people have died from the disease with 2,034,226 patients discharged after been declared free from the virus.

The United States of America remains the hardest hit country in the world with a third of the global cases. 1.6 million cases have been confirmed with almost 95,000 deaths.

The pandemic has now shifted to Latin America with Brazil recording high number of cases. Its current confirmed cases stands at 293,357 with almost 19,000 deaths.

European countries have started relaxing the strict lockdown they imposed on their citizens as the continent became the epicentre of the disease after China brought it under control.

The coronavirus disease which is officially called Covid-19 emerged in Wuhan, capital of China’s Hubei province late last year.

Its severity was downplayed by countries and the World Health Organisation. It was around late February that cases started springing in Europe.

Top World Health Organization (WHO) experts are warning that the novel coronavirus could become endemic like HIV and the world will have to learn how to live with it.

Dr Mike Ryan, WHO emergencies expert said at a briefing on Wednesday that even if a vaccine is found, it will require ‘massive effort’ to control the virus, hence the need to quit predicting when the virus would disappear.

He added that just as the world has come to terms with HIV, the world will have to do same with the novel coronavirus.

“It is important to put this on the table: this virus may become just another endemic virus in our communities, and this virus may never go away,”

“HIV has not gone away – but we have come to terms with the virus,” Dr Ryan told the virtual press conference from Geneva.

Meanwhile WHO Director General, Tedros Adhanom, stressed that with collective effort, the virus can be controlled.

“The trajectory is in our hands, and it’s everybody’s business, and we should all contribute to stop this pandemic.”
