Woman From Embu Gets Away With Murder
A High Court in Embu led by Judge Florence Muchemi freed a woman who was charged with the murder of her husband’s lover in 2013. The accused, Benedicta Gacugu was acquitted on Wednesday due to lack of evidence to prosecute in the 6 year old case.
During the trial proceedings, one of the witnesses who was actually the suspect’s husband testified to witnessing the murder. He claimed that on the night of the murder, he was doing some shopping at Ishiara market at around 7.30 pm when he witnessed the heinous crime. He shared that his wife appeared out of nowhere and stabbed the deceased who at the time was seated outside a nearby shop.
Despite the husband’s testimony, the other witnesses called by the prosecution seemed to have conflicting stories that did not prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the prime suspect Benedicta was actually the killer. The lawyer of the accused argued that the evidence available could not substantiate the murder and asked the court to dismiss the case.
Residents of Embu county are not sure what to make of the High court’s decision however many believe justice was not served and that the accused Benedicta simply got lucky enough to get away with murder.
