The Southern African Development Community (SADC), the regional block for southern African countries has urged an immediate truncation of the the economic blockade on Zimbabwe. The United States and the European Union imposed the severe sanctions on the country in 2002 during the reign of Robert Mugabe.

They were put in place to force Mugabe out of power after what they claim were poor human rights records and the seizure of white-owned lands. The sanctions had a crippling effect on the Zimbabwe economy since it lacked foreign investment.

The current president Emmerson Mnangagwa who came to power pledging economic turn-around has squarely blamed these sanctions for his country’s woes. Zimbabwe is currently in a midst of political turmoil fuelled by opposition protests on exacerbating standard of living among its citizenry.
