Polio Hits Northern Ghana

According to the Ministry of Health and Ghana Health Service, they have received report of confirmed Poliomyelitis from the National Polio Laboratory, in the form of a sample from a 2-year-old girl with Acute Flaccid Paralysis (AFP) from Andonyama in Chereponi, a sub-district in the Northern Region.

The child was first seen at Chereponi District Hospital on the 27th of July with sudden onset of weakness in both lower limbs, stool samples were then taken as part of routine polio surveillance, and sent to the National Polio Laboratory at Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research, for laboratory investigations; the sample tested positive, according to Ghana Health Service.

In response to this, GHS have deployed National health teams to assist the regional/ district teams to carry out detailed probes into the situation. They’ve also mapped out areas at risk and will conduct reactive vaccination campaigns in the affected and adjoining high risk districts.

The GHS have furthermore cautioned the public that since Polio is a highly infectious disease which mainly attacks children, parents should practice good personal and environmental sanitation. Parents are also encouraged to observe closely symptoms of polio in their children and report to the nearest health facility for immediate medical attention if symptoms are noticed.
