Kenya National Union of Teachers’ Secretary General Wilson Sossion celebrated a small victory on Monday when he won court orders that pretty much saved his job. The Labour Court Judge ruled in his favor, stopping a planned meeting that was set up by some NEC top officials with an agenda of kicking him out of the organisation.

Judge Brian Ongaya of the Labour Court granted the orders favoring Sossion after the embattled head of teachers forwarded the alleged plot to remove him. He filed an application reporting that a couple of members from the National Executive Council (NEC) were plotting to remove him from office.

According to Sossion, the board was set to have a meeting on August 29th but due to administrative issues, he postponed the meeting. Afterwards, he received notification through social media that some NEC members were still planning on proceeding with the meeting. Upon further investigation, Sossion uncovered that the intention of the meeting being reconvened was to discuss and plot his removal.

Mr. Sossion has been under pressure to resign from some NEC members following a fallout with the TSC and senior teachers over the 2017-2021 Collective Bargaining Agreement worth Sh. 54 billion. TSC suspended the implementation to the third phase of the salary deal which was to be implemented by the end of July. Kuppet terms TSC’s decision to deny over 100,000 teachers pay increase for two months now demoralising especially with schools officially opening next week. Wilson Sossion who clearly lacks much needed support from his circle should definitely watch his back to prevent another attempt to overthrow him.
