Femicide On The Rise In South Africa, With The Rape and Murder Of Uyinene Mrwetyana

Not only is South Africa facing shame as a Xenophobic country, it is also one of the countries with a high rate of women murders.

Femicide can be interpreted as the gender-related killing of women and girls based on hate. According to a recent study from 2017/18, a woman is murdered every 3 hours in South Africa, making the country on top of the list of femicide rate.

Not long ago, a 19-year-old South African girl named Uyinene Mrwetyana was raped and murdered by a post office worker who confessed to committing the inhumane act. The girl’s death has been abuzz on Twitter, while her colleague school mates at University of Cape Town have held a demonstration in which they protest against female rape and murder.

The hashtag on Twitter is #AmINext, since no one knows who may next be the victim.
