Fact: Kenyans Fall Victim to Xenophobia in South Africa

It is reported that quite a number of Kenyans have fallen victim to the xenophobic attacks in South Africa. These Kenyans are among the group of victims of physical attacks, arson and looting. Jean Kamau, the Kenyan High Commissioner to South Africa confirmed that indeed several kenyans have been attacked in Gauteng Province.

Foreigner burns after Xenophobic attack

Fresh xenophobic violence have been reported in Pretoria, Johannesburg and Gauteng. In the wake of these attacks, 189 people have been arrested by South African police. At least 5 people have been killed in the violence against businesses owned by foreigners.


Looting in supermarkets

Kenyan High commissioner Ms. Kamau has urged all Kenyans residing and running businesses in the affected regions to report all incidences of attacks. She also insisted that they cooperate with the police to maintain their safety.

Kenyan community members in South Africa are asked to ensure that they work with their local diaspora leaders to monitor the situation and take measures to safeguard their security. All must remain vigilant and aware of their environment,” said Ms. Kamau
