Nairobi Governor Mike Mbuvi aka Sonko is reported to have pocketed Sh 20 million from garbage collection tenders. Detectives from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) claimed that some of the firms that got the tender worth Sh. 357 million wired money to Sonko’s account. In particular, Sh 20 million was wired to Sonko’s account according to The Star.

The money was not paid directly. It was transacted through proxies and sister companies. Detectives claim that the proxies were to avoid raising any suspicions. A big fish at the center of the allegations is Anthony Otieno Ombok, director of Yiro Enterprises. His firm is among those that received the tender that has now brought up a corruption scandal.

On Tuesday, Governor Sonko was grilled for almost 10 hours but maintained his innocence claiming not to be under investigation. “I’m not under investigation, but I was summoned as the Chief Executive of the county to come and shed light. As county boss, I don’t sit in the procurement committee and i’m not the accounting officer but I have the general responsibility for my officers,“said Sonko at Integrity Centre. It’s only a matter of time before EACC uncovers the truth.
