It is common practice in Nigeria and Africa, and indeed across many parts of the world, to see beggars on the streets and public places begging for alms.

Usually, most of these beggars are physically challenged, homeless and having a hard time finding decent jobs to do to earn them some income.

One would imagine that street beggars are paupers and for that matter depend on the little coins thrown at them by sympathetic people on the street.

However, the story of Alhaji Umar Dikko is uncommon. He literally begged his way to riches. Umar has been begging for alms on the streets of Lagos for the most of his life.

He is not the regular day to day beggar you see in the streets of Lagos begging for alms from public spirited Nigerians who take pity on their conditions and hand out stipend to them.

Alhaji Umar may be a beggar but he is a beggar with a difference as he is not only the Sarkin Maroka (King of Beggars) in the Ajegunle area of the state but has also carved a niche for himself as one of the richest beggars in Nigeria.

Though physically challenged, Alhaji Umar is a wealthy man in every sense of the word, with four wives and 18 children to boast of, a thriving transportation business, a sachet water factory and five houses he built in his home state of Kano.

One thing which is clear and obvious in Umar’s story is that he put the little monies he earned from the streets to use by investing into properties and businesses.
