The Prime Minister of Ivory Coast, Amadou Gon Coulibaly has has been confirmed dead by the secretary-general in the Presidency.

His death, comes barely a week after returning from a medical leave and few months to the country’s presidential election. He was 61-years.

According to reports from Bloomberg, Coulibaly died on Wednesday July 8 after attending a cabinet meeting. The secretary-general in the presidency, Patrick Achi, said on television.

This leaves his political party only four months to nominate a competent successor before the presidential election in October.

Amadou Gon Coulibaly, before his death was selected by the President of Ivory Coast Alassane Ouattara back in March 2020 to succeed him.

He once served as Minister for Agriculture from 2002 to 2010 and secretary-general of the presidency from 2011 to 2017 before assuming office as the Prime Minister in 2017.

Peter O’Neill, former Papua New Guinea Pime Minister, has been arrested by the police over an alleged $14 million purchase of generators from Israel without approval.

O’neil was arrested at the Port Moresby airport on Saturday after returning from Australia. He is currently being interrogated in police custody, the assistant crimes commissioner said in a statement.

In the statement, the former prime minister was accused of directing a 50m Kina ($14m) payment for two generators from Israel without parliamentary approval, without following the country’s public financial management law and without putting the sale to tender.

It further stated evidence of abuse of office, misappropriation and official corruption although it did not give detailed information about the generators or identity of the seller.

The former Prime Minister has however blamed the purchase of the generator on the current Prime minister, James Marape.

On Sunday, O’Neil said the generators were bought to fix “long standing”blackouts in Port Moresby and Lae and Marape, then finance minister, authorized the exemption from proper procurement processes and approving the non-tender contract.

Prominent economist Abdalla Hamdok has been appointed in as the new prime minister of Sudan. Hamdok’s selection was announced the same day the members of the Sovereign Council were sworn in. The Council comprises five military officers and six civilian members.

The military and protest leaders have agreed to a poer-sharing deal

The new prime minister has vowed to restore Sudan to the path of prosperity. He will be naming members of his cabinet in the coming days. The portfolios of Interior ad Defence have been left to the military. The 63 year old also promised to curb unemployment.

He earned a degree from University of Khartoum and a doctorate from University of Manchester. Hamdok brings on board several years of experience after working with multinational orgsnisations like the United Nations and Africa Development Bank.
