The hashtag #EndSWATNow is currently trending on Twitter. The celebrities have been tweeting about this new police unit and the new demands to get it scrapped as well.

Peter Okoye, popularly known as Mr. P of defunct P-square fame has asked whether the IGP thinks they were protesting for a change of name?

He took to twitter like many other citizens to register his displeasure with the new development.

Joy has found its way back on the streets of Nigeria after days of protest against the Nigerian Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).

Earlier this afternoon, the Inspector General of Police announced the termination of SARS and many have celebrated the news. Ace Music producer Don Jazzy, Burna Boy, Banky W, Wizkid and other celebrities have reacted.

On twitter, Banky W wrote;“Nigeria, we won. IG of Police has announced that SARS has been dissolved. But that’s only the 1st battle. The war is still on. We now need to see corrupt officers prosecuted, and wide scale police reforms. And we need sustained systemic change. This just shows what is possible.”

CEO Mavin records, Don Jazzy wrote;

“Congratulations Nigerians. Y’all did it. This is just the beginning tho. But yes we can go all the way. Now we can help the police get enough funding from the few thieves holding it at the top. So they can police us right.”

Inspector-General of Police in Nigeria, Mohammed Adamu, has announced that the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad(SARS) has been dissolved with immediate effect.

The IGP announced this afternoon in a live broadcast and his statements were confirmed on the official social media handles of the Presidency.

“The Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad of the Nigeria Police Force otherwise known as SARS is hereby dissolved in all the 36 State Police Commands and the Federal Capital Territory.” He said at the briefing.

He said the operatives will be redeployed to other police formations and commands.

This new development comes after days of protest both online and offline by Nigerians against police brutality and other menace by SARS Operatives in the country.

A cross-section of the Nigerian youth in Lagos have hit the streets in protest against SARS and police brutalities.

The youth who poured onto the streets in their hundreds, held placards with inscriptions such as, “I am not a criminal, stop killing Nigerian youth”, “Nigerian police, stop killing US” among others.

They gathered at the Ikeja bridge in Lagos and promised to March straight to the police headquarters.

The youth have made it clear that they will continue the protest for three days. Within those days, they will visit Lagos State House of Assembly to present a petition to the political leadership of the State for the dissolution of the SARS unit of the police service.

Tomorrow, musicians Runtown and Falz will also be leading another protest against SARS.

The Special Anti-Robbery Squad(SARS) in Nigeria has shot two suspected robbers dead after disarming them.

The robbers according to a post on Instablog9ja were operating on a Jiji when they were apprehended, disarmed, handcuffed and then shot by the officials.
