Published

A court in South Africa has banned the display of the apartheid flag. The ruling which was welcomed by majority of South Africans makes it illegal to display the white-minority era flag. The court says it smacks of discrimination and racial abuse to show the flag.

The apartheid flag was used in South Africa till 1994

Flouting the court’s order will make the person liable to community service and fines. The move has however angered opponents of the new law who claim their freedom of speech is being infringed upon.

The current multi-coloured flag has been used since 1994

Apartheid was the period in South African history in which blacks were placed under strict political, economic and education oppression. It was implemented in 1948 by the white-minority government. It officially ended in 1994 after Nelson Mandela became the first black president.
