The Dancehall King In Ghana: Shatta Wale And Stonebwoy Race For The Crown

First of all, there is absolutely no doubt that Stonebwoy and Shatta Wale are two talented music artistes in Ghana. These two individuals are the reason dancehall is thriving in Ghana’s music industry. But for Shatta Wale and Stonebwoy, dancehall wouldn’t exist in Ghana- no kidding.

Although neither of them would entertain the idea of being confined to a single music genre, it’s dancehall that many people associate with them.

As an example to the above, Shatta Wale’s song ‘My Level’ was recently recognized as the Highlife Song of the Year in the recently held Vodafone Ghana Music Awards- 2019 (VGMAs). But critics and commentators as well as fans alike, questioned why a dancehall artiste would be awarded for highlife category.

Most times, the duo are tagged as dancehall/reggae artistes but we know dancehall is a different genre of music from reggae. And by the way, if one were to observe closely, reggae music and artistes in Ghana are now in the shadows. The genre needs serious revival otherwise half a decade from now, Ghana would be bereft of reggae music.

With that said, it is no secret that because of the recognition of their contribution to dancehall in Ghana, there is always a looming tension and conflict between Shatta Wale and Stonebwoy.

Of course, they’re competing for who deserves the rightful title of ‘dancehall king’ in Ghana- and that’s a fact irrespective of how much they may deny it. The question on the minds of many Ghanaians and music lovers is: between Stonebowy and Shatta Wale, who is a better dancehall artiste?

Now to the crux of this article; it seems Shatta Wale is leading the way for Stonebwoy to follow in the race to the ascension of the dancehall throne and being crowned the dancehall king. Or is it the other way round? Stonebwoy has also set a standard that befits one who deserves the crown.

In terms of awards and recognition, both have done very well for themselves. Between 2015 and 2018, Shatta Wale has won about 50 awards and out of this number, about 15 of them were directly related to dancehall. Stonebwoy, on the other hand, has won about 23 awards between 2015 and 2018. And 14 out of this 23 awards were directly related to dancehall.

About 3 months ago, Shatta Wale had a major breakthrough in his music career having been feature on American singer and songwriter Beyonce’s Lion King: The Gift album. Waves of this collaboration are yet to subside but now it is being reported that Stonebwoy and America singer Keri Hilson are working together to potentially release song(s) together.

Locally- in Ghana and across Africa- and indeed internationally, Stonebwoy and Shatta Wale have made a name for themselves. They have been recognized among the top musicians on the continent and their popularity continues to grow. Perhaps one defining moment will settle the debate once and for all- who is the danceking in Ghana?
