Yesterday, a Kano Upper Shari’a Court sentenced a 22-year-old Nigerian singer to death for blaspheming against Prophet Muhammad.

The singer, Yahaya Sharif-Aminu, was reported to have been dragged out by youths in Kano State demanding that action be taken against the singer for composing a song against the prophet.

The angry youths was also said to have set ablaze the family house of the singer located at Sharifai quarters in Kano Municipal Area.

Yahaya has been sentenced to death by hanging yesterday August 10,2020 by the presiding judge Khadi Aliyu Kani.

A sharia court in Kano State, northern Nigeria has handed down the death sentence to a musician who was found guilty of insulting the Islamic prophet, Muhammed.

The court ruled that Yahaya Sharif-Aminu, 22, was guilty of committing blasphemy for a song he produced and shared on popular social media handle, WhatsApp.

The accused did not deny the charges and the judge, Khadi Aliyu Muhammad Kani said he could appeal against the death sentence.

The northern region of Africa’s most populous country uses the strict version of sharia to adjudicate legal issues

Only one of the death sentences ordered by the sharia courts has been carried out since they were reintroduced in 1999.

Protestors have called for the swift execution of the ruling. They had burnt down his family home and gathered at the sharia court to attempt instant justice.

The musician was accused of blasphemous after he released a song which glorified his local imam in a way which puts him at par with the Islamic prophe.

The small town of Kadawa in Kano State is in shock after a twenty-five-year-old man stabbed himself to death with a kitchen knife when he was jilted by his fiancee.

Ashiru Musa Danrimi allegedly stabbed himself to death after his wife-to-be dumped him for his richer friend.

Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, the state police spokesperson confirmed the sad incident to the press. He revealed that the police rushed unconscious Ashiru to the hospital where he died.

Family of the deceased are blaming his former fiancee, one Aisha for their relative’s death. Neighbours have been engulfed in shock after a once enviable relationship turned up tragic.

The deceased has since been buried in tandem with Islamic rites. Conspicuously absent at the funeral was his friend whose betrayal pushed him to end his life.

A law to castrate convicted rapists in Kano State, north-western Nigeria is at an advance stage as the state legislators prepare to promulgate a law that would dish out that harsh punishment.

Members of the state assembly recommended that punishment after the state and Nigeria as a whole was rocked with several rape cases with some even culminating in he victims’ demise.

The Assembly arrived at the consensus following a motion filed on Wednesday by a member of the assembly, Nurudeen Alhassan (APC-Rano), who had sought a revision of the law.

Nurudeen Alhassan, justified his motion on the premise that the current maximum 14 years jail term is not deterring would-be rapists hence a much harsher punishment.

Nigeria practises a federal system of government. This enables each of its 36 states to institute its own laws but in tandem with the parameters set up by the federal government.

The governor of Kano State in northern Nigeria has under an executive order slashed the salaries of his political appointees and other high-earned workers in the state.

This is to accommodate the dwindling resources of the state as the coronavirus bites hard in the west African country. Kano is one of the worst-hit states.

Gov. Abdullahi Ganduje made this known in a statement released by his press secretary. He blamed the lockdown necessitated by the coronavirus disease on the stalling of economic activities.

This has in turn led to a drastic fall in revenue mobilisation. He said the decision affected the governor, deputy governor and all public office holders in the state.

This has triggered a fall in revenue mobilisation thereby necessitating such drastic measures to keep the states in particular and the country as a whole, afloat.

Abba Anwar, Chief Press Secretary to the governor confirmed the news in a press release. He said the decision affected the governor, deputy governor and all public office holders in the state.

“Due to shortfall in the federation account and collapse in the Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) because of COVID-19 challenges, all political office holders in Kano State are to receive half salaries with effect from May.

“There is also a serious setback in the IGR, due to COVID-19 pandemic challenges. Whereas almost all companies in the state are no longer in operation due to lockdown.

“Other areas where the state gets revenue are no longer operational. This also is another reason for slashing the salaries”
