The minister of Education, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh has shot down any suggestions to close down Ghana’s schools as the country grapples to contain the spread of the coronavirus disease.

Final year students at the junior, senior and tertiary levels were ordered back in school late last month as the education sector was halted in mid-March following a surge in the country’s confirmed cases of the infectious disease.

The government’s reluctance to close down schools was met with disappointment from the Ghana Medical Association (G.M.A.) as they had hoped their suggestion of total closure would have been considered.

Enumerating the reasons why the government could not close down the schools, the sector minister averred that female students would be susceptible to rape if they stay at home for a long time.

The calls for the closure of schools have been necessitated by a number of recorded cases across some second-cycle institutions which caused many parents to troop into the schools to fetch their children.

Some African countries have either cancelled the school calendar or suspended final year examination. Conspicuous on the list are Kenya which will reopen schools in 2021 while Nigeria has cancelled all final year examinations.

Ghana currently has almost 23,000 case count with 129 deaths. The active number of cases is pegged at 5,129. The country places fourth pn the Africa chart only surpassed by South Africa, Egypt and Nigeria.

Currently, Ghana has a confirmed case of almost 22,000 with active cases now pegged at 4,683. The death toll is 129. Ghana places fourth in Africa as the hardest-hit countries only surpassed by South Africa, Egypt and Nigeria.
